Lawn Mowers: The advantage of Mulching Mowers

Mulching lawn mowers are a relatively new development. In essence they are modified rotary mowers that have been modified to cut the grass clippings many times into tiny pieces which will then sift down to the ground through the grass and act as a mulch for the lawn. This means the mowers have higher blades with expanded cutting edges.

You may be old enough to remember when leaving grass clippings on the lawn was supposed to be a massive problem, which it is, if they are not turned into particles as they are in mulching mowers. Thick layers of cut grass lying over the lawn can harbour fungus and encourage pests, as well as starving the grass stems of light so they become yellow and weak.

However, when they are reduced to a fine mulch, grass clippings can be highly beneficial to your lawn, first the nutrients provided by grass clippings means you'll need fewer applications of fertiliser. When grass clippings decompose, they return nitrogen to the soil which improves its texture and nutrient content, leaving you with a richer, healthier looking lawn

Mulching the grass is also a form of recycling which saves you time, because you don't have to clear up the clippings and put them in the compost or take them to the tip, and it saves the planet because it means you are re-using the valuable nutrients in the grass to feed the next year's grass growth.

Mulching can save you time, money and save the environment too. Alko mulching mower courtesy of www.gardening-tools-direct.co.uk
