Water Gardens
Water gardens are a very attractive feature. Adding a simple pond or creating a series of pools can give your garden it's own unique character. There are many options available, and even a small shallow bird bath type water feature will still be a great way to attract wildlife into your garden.
The following small guides should provide some useful advice.
Selecting a Pump
The best way to make sure you get the correct pump for your needs is to consult your local supplier. They will be able to offer you the best advice specific to your needs and requirements.
You can do some rough preparation calculations that will be helpful though.
Determining Desired Flow Rate Ideally you need your minimum flow rate needs to be at least half of your pond volume. E.G If your pond had a volume of 2000 gallons of water then you will want to pump at least 1000 gallons per hour.
This would be a large pond, and therefore require a large pump. Additional features such as fountains increase the demands on the pump, and you should take these into consideration.
You will also need to consider your filter or ultraviolet sterilizer to make sure that you are moving the right amount of water for these devices.
If your filter or ultraviolet sterilizer has a maximum flow that is less than your required flow rate for good circulation of your pond water, then you will need to divert some of the water around these devices and back into the pond. This is accomplished by adding a tee fitting in the pipe coming from the pump and before your filter and/or ultraviolet sterilizer. A ball valve is added between the tee and the filter. Another ball valve is installed on the other leg of the tee. Add more pipe to this leg of the tee and extend the pipe to the waterfall or to the pond. Adjust the ball valves to get the appropriate amount of water flowing to your filter.
Seek professional advice to ensure you get the pump and parts that you need.
