Water Gardens

Water gardens are a very attractive feature. Adding a simple pond or creating a series of pools can give your garden it's own unique character. There are many options available, and even a small shallow bird bath type water feature will still be a great way to attract wildlife into your garden.

The following small guides should provide some useful advice.

Installing a Fountain

There are many of types and styles of fountains available, ranging from a simple vertical jet of water to more complex systems. You can also find fountains that have been integrated into sculptures.

The type you choose will be based on personal preference, but you should carefully consider the space that you have available as well.

All fountains require some sort of pump system to circulate the water they use. Most of them will use an electrically powered pump, so you should think about the method of supply. E.G How far away is the power source? You could opt for a solar-powered pump, you should check to see that it will have enough power for your needs though. Most pumps will be of the low-volume submersible type, and will have various safety features pre-installed, such as a volume regulator and a by-pass valve.

Submersible pumps for fountains can be operated directly by mains electricity, but this is not recommended. It is far safer to use a transformer that reduces the current to 24 volts. A low-voltage pump is perfectly safe and is easy to install and to wire. If you are unsure of the electrical requirements for your fountain, you should ALWAYS consult a qualified electrician. Also remember that any electric cables being used for the fountain should be of an appropriate type for outdoor usage.
