Water Gardens
Water gardens are a very attractive feature. Adding a simple pond or creating a series of pools can give your garden it's own unique character. There are many options available, and even a small shallow bird bath type water feature will still be a great way to attract wildlife into your garden.
The following small guides should provide some useful advice.
Garden Pond De Icers
Unless you are planning to keep fish or aquatic animals that require a specific environment to be maintained, a pond de-icer may not be something you require. Many people just leave a ball floating on the surface of the pond, as this will tend to move around, and will prevent ice crystals from forming into sheets of ice. Obviously your local conditions will be a key factor.
A pond de-icer is designed to heat an area of a small pond and keep the water in its area above 40 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent ice from forming.
Preventing ice formation is beneficial in the respect of allowing the pond to release toxic gases from decomposing organic matter, and it also allows the oxygen that it needs to get in! This is especially important if you have fish.
De-icers can be floating, submersible or convertible types, they are designed for use in smaller sized garden ponds. You should consult your local supplier for specifications and advice.
