Watering
It is very useful to have a suitable watering can for use with your house plants.
You will find one with a narrow spout, will allow you to accurately and easily water any house plant.
Balanced watering is the key to success as many plants will die if they are given too much water. Obviously this also applies if they get too little. Every plant will have it's own particular requirements, and a simple way to check if the plant needs to be watered is the finger test.
If you insert your index finger into the soil up to the first joint, and the soil feels damp, then you do not need to water the plant, but if it feels dry, then it is a good idea to water. This of course will only be relevant to plants that do require regular watering.
When watering, fill the pot until you see the water bubbling out of the drainage holes. Leave the plant for a few minutes to absorb the excess water and remove any that is left.
Some plants, such as African Violets prefer to be watered from below. Remember to wait until all excess is taken up, and then you can remove any left over.
Another important aspect of watering is to ensure that the water is at room temperature. This will help to avoid shocking the plants.
