Careing for House Plants
Humidity
Most houseplants require a degree of humidity for optimum growth.
A lot of modern central heating units installed in houses can create very dry atmospheres to grow plants in.
To solve this problem, there are a number of tricks to increase humidity. A few ideas are described below:
- Place pots on trays containing gravel, keep the gravel moist, this will allow humid air to rise up amongst the plants.
- Place one pot inside a larger one, and fill the gap with compost or stones, again keep the filler moist. This also helps to prevent the compost drying out.
- Grouping plants together helps to raise humidity.
- You can also spray the plants once or twice a day with water using a mist sprayer, depending on the temperature. The warmer the room, the more humid it will be and regular spraying will be needed. A cooler room, will have the opposite effect.
