Caring for flowering hedges

Flowering shrubs that have been used to make a hedge should not be cut back to create a defined outline as this can spoil their natural style and growing pattern. They can be pruned in an individual manor, best suited to the specific shurbs requirements. Use secateurs for any light pruning.

Deciding when to prune shrub based hedges depends on the species and their flowering habit. Plants that flower on the current year's shoots, such as lavender, fuchsias and roses, are pruned in early or mid-spring, whereas forsythia, deutzia and berberis, which flower on old wood, should be pruned when the blooms fade.
