Improve Your Lawn - Tips
This small selection of useful tips will help you to keep your lawn in good health. This applies if you starting a new lawn, or maintaining an existing one.
Mowing - little and often is the secret. Regular cutting the lawn tidy, thickens the turf and deters weeds. In the summer, mow at least once a week. You should set the lawnmower to leave around a 1" growth, this will help to protect the lawn against damage.
Killing weeds - there are many solutions available. Small patches of weeds can easily be pulled up by hand or spot-treated with weedkiller. Larger more substantial areas can be treated with a suitable lawn weedkiller.
Moss prevention - moss growth occurs if the lawn is too shady, badly compacted, damp or if the grass is kept too short. Spiking compacted or damp areas with a garden fork will help to prevent these problems occurring. You can treat the moss with a chemical moss killer, and once the moss has died, it can be raked out with a spring-tined rake.
Dry lawn problems - during long dry spells, mow less frequently and leave grass to grow longer. It may turn brown, but it will grow green again when the rain comes. Do not be tempted to feed the grass as this can scorch it. Also you should avoid excessive watering, as this encourages the grass to root closer to the surface, making it vulnerable to drought.
Pathways - if part of the lawn is used regularly as a path, it's worth laying a proper pathway for protection. Stepping-stones can be a very attractive addition to any garden. You should lay them with their surface just below the level of the lawn so the mower's blades can pass over them without causing any damage.
