Your garden is a great place to have fun in. You can achieve a lot even with quite a small space. Garden games can be supplied in kits, off the shelf products, or even home made creations.

Usually the main reason for a fun garden, is to create a garden for the kids. Many kinds of garden toys, kids toys, outdoor toys, can be purchase at the usual high street outlets.

Make Your Own Playcentre

If you have DIY skills you may like to try building a play centre for your children. There are lots of plans around that you can use as a blueprint for your design.

For a more speedy solution you may like to purchase flatpack elements to build the play centre, rather than make all the parts yourself.

One of the great things about a custom design is that you can personalise it. You also have full control of the dimensions.

You should consider several factors before building anything though.

Materials

Timber is the obvious one to choose if you are building from scratch. You could buy plastic and metal pre-made units, and use a combination of custom building and brought in parts.

- Timber is a natural product, which will shrink in heat and expand when wet. As a result some cracking and splitting will occur. This is however, less prominent in rectangular machined timber.

- Weathering is something that all objects will have to endure if they are semi-permanent additions to the garden. It is a good idea to make sure any wooden structure are suitably protected against rain and other elements.

- Any ropes should ideally be made of soft synthetic flexirope, identical in appearance to natural rope but weatherproof aswell.

Assembly

- Measure your area carefully before you buy.

- Use good tools, and construction should be carried out by skilled adults.

- If you do not have the relevant skills, always get a professional to do the job properly.

- You do not want to cause an accident.

- Ensure All fastenings, fasteners, ropes, and structure parts, are tested for quality and safety.

- If you are buying in the units for the play centre, read any instructions fully!

Safety - Safety of your children using your climbing frame is critical!

- A safety surface such as woodchip should be laid under your play equipment to cushion any falls

- A 1.8m (6ft) perimeter should be allowed around your play equipment.

- Avoid obstacles such as paths, trees and washing lines.

- Play should be supervised by adults.
