What to do about worm casts on your lawn?
Worm casts are deposits of mud found on your lawn. Perfectly
normal, but detract from the appearance of the lawn. They
are caused when the worms in your lawn are feeding close
to the surface, when the weather is warm and damp. The
worms feed on the rotting vegetation in the soil and leave
their muddy excrement behind on the lawn. There are benefits
that the worms bring to your garden, being the aerating
and draining of the soil that their tunnels provide. However,
this really only happens when your lawn is damp and relatively
warm. Beyond these conditions the worms will go deeper
into the soil and will not be noticed so much.
The best way to rid your lawn of these deposits is to wait until the casts are dry and them break them up and spread them across the lawn with a gardening tool directly across the lawn.
Failing this, there are no good pesticides available for the worms so the employment of a pest control company who have knowledge of garden worms may be necessary.
