Mowing the lawn in your garden

To achieve the lawn you want for your garden, its worth taking some time to consider what you should be doing to achieve it.

Frequency of lawn mowing

. As a rule of thumb you should always leave two thirds of the grass. Cutting the lawn to short will damage the grass. Therefore, have an idea of the length of grass that suits your garden and set your lawn mower blades accordingly.

Lawn type for your garden

The use you put your garden and lawn to will play a large part in how your tend to it. If you are maintaining or trying to achieve the 'putting green' lawn you will need to cut quite frequently. This could mean lawn mowing two or three times per week in summer.

A lawn to be used by the family may need to be more durable. You should therefore let it grow a little longer, perhaps keeping it at around 2.5 - 3 cm. In the winter 3 cm or more is advisable. This should keep you lawn healthy, your garden looking good, and actually serve the purpose you intent it for.

Lawn health

After lawn mowing you should collect the grass cuttings. In many cases lawn mowers have grass collection boxes, which will make this task a little easier. However, if your lawn mower doesn't have this facility, you should use a rake to remove the cuttings.

If left the cuttings, leaves etc will rot down and damage the grass. Even relatively small quantities of cuttings will cause a thatch to develop. After time you will then need to think about scarifying. It is well worth taking the time when you mow the lawn.

Striped lawn - garden perfection

If this is the look you are trying to achieve in your garden, you will already have a cylinder lawn mower. As with all lawn mowing you should go around the edge first, and then start parallel lines. To ensure the lawn is mowed in straight lines, you may want to use pegs and string to act as a guide.
