Lawn care through the
seasons
Spring
Spring is the time
when your garden begins to wakeup and start to grow again
after the winter of relative inactivity. As the weather
gets warmer and the garden is still damp the plants will
start to grow quickly and your lawn is no exception. This
makes the spring a very important time for you and your
lawn. Now is the time to encourage the growth and to restrict
the growth of the weeds.
The sowing of seeds
and laying of turf is best done in the spring. Remember
when doing this it is important to let the new get established
before mowing. However, when not sowing or laying turf
mowing your lawn often will help encourage growth and
will result in a dense and even texture to your lawn.
It is also the
time to apply fertilisers and weed killers. When you do
this, ensure to apply evenly across the lawn with the
correct garden tools. Failure to do this could result
in patchy areas in the lawn.
Remember to gradually
lower the height of your lawn mowers cut as the spring
wares on.
Summer
During the summer
continue to mow your lawn often, perhaps up to twice a
week. You will now have dropped the height of your lawn
mower to the lowest setting of your chosen range. However,
do remember if you experience very dry weather it will
be necessary to increase the height of your lawn mowers
cut so that the lawn retains some moisture within the
lawn.
It is also now
the time you should scarify your lawn. Again using the
correct gardening tools lightly scarify your lawn to help
get ride of the moss and debris within the lawn. You should
not scarify in very dry conditions.
It is also a good
idea to aerate your lawn in very dry conditions and water
to aid the water getting to the grass roots. The best
time to water the garden is either in the early morning
or early evening when the daytime temperatures have fallen.
Autumn
As autumn arrives
new lawns should still be cut but not to a very low level.
For established lawns you should now start to reduce the
frequency of your lawn mowing. However, you should keep
scarifying and aerating the lawn to aid the health of
any damaged areas.
As the leafs fall
from the trees it is a good idea to remove them from the
lawn. This job can seem never ending in a large garden,
however, nowadays there are some very effective and reasonably
priced gardening tools that can make this job very easy.
Leaf blowers really do make this job very easy.
Remember to try
and keep off the lawn when it becomes waterlogged and
frosty as the autumn continues to avoid damaging your
lawn and the hard work you have done.
