Things to look out for in the garden - planting by the moon
Planting by the moon is an ancient planting system once utilised by almost every culture throughout the world and is returning to popularity as people search for alternatives to chemical pesticides and fertilizers. The system is quite complicated but some people claim to have huge success with it, so perhaps it's worth trying?
12 hours after the dark of the moon to the first quarter
It is said that during this period all living things feels an upsurge of energy, so this is a good time to plant out or to start any new projects, although some folk also believe that it is better to wait until you can actually see the crescent of the new moon. This period is best for plant or transplanting annuals that produce above ground, especially those of a leafy kind that produce seeds outside the fruit (strawberries etc) and cereals and grains. Don't pick anything for harvest, as it rots too easily in this quarter. Mow lawns to increase growth.
First quarter to 12 hours before the full moon
The energy is still rising, which makes this an ideal phase for starting anything. Plant, graft and transplant annuals that produce above ground, especially of a vine-type with seeds produced inside such as beans, peas, peppers, pumpkins and tomatoes. Continue to plant cereals and grains. All activities listed for the new moon phase are still successful if undertaken in this quarter and the last two days of this phase, just before full moon are optimum for planting - grafts take best if done then.
12 hours after full moon to last quarter
It is claimed that this phase sees the peak of the electromagnetic energy of all living things at the exact moment of the full moon, and then a slow withdrawal of energy for the next two weeks, as the moon wanes. This is the time to plant or sow perennials, biennials, bulb and root crops and anything that produces below ground as the sap flow will travel downwards to the roots. Pruning is best done now, and it is an excellent time to harvest all crops, medicinal herbs and cosmetic plants as they will be at their most potent.
Last quarter to 12 hours before dark of the moon
This is a barren phase, when you, and the garden should rest or to prepare for the next new moon. It is a good time for pulling weeds, turning the earth, pruning and spraying - also a great period in which to apply organic fertilizers. Mow lawns to decrease growth. This is the best phase for harvesting crops that you want to store for a period of time. The best news of all - weeds pulled during this phase supposedly lack the strength to sprout again!
