Constructing a compost heap in your home garden
Peg out a 1 - 1.5 m square in a sunny
part of the garden. Put four solid stakes in each corner
and using wire, mesh or wooden slats, enclose the bin
on three sides. Make a mattress with woody cuttings from
the garden.
Towards the centre drive three or four stakes through the branches into the soil below. Cover the mattress with a layer of straw, dry grass clippings, then a layer of nitrogenous material (manures, well-chopped vegetable scraps, etc.).
After the heap has heated up, turn it with a garden fork. Cover the heap to keep the rain from soaking it and protecting it from drying out in summer. Your garden will appreciate your efforts.
