Allotment - the Where, When, Why and How - What is the NSALG?

It's the National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners and it's been around one form or another, since 1901, when the Agricultural Organisation Society's aims, included establishing co-operation amongst agriculturists and the organisation of small holdings and allotments.

Today, it maintains what it calls the 'British heritage' by providing a united voice for the allotment movement. Unlike the ARI, the NSALG has a specific focus on action to preserve, protect and promote a traditional way of life - whatever that may be! And it states that 'with today's emphasis on protection of the environment, increased leisure facilities, attention to a healthy way of life and the recognition of organic growing, NSALG spreads its word the length and breadth of the country' - which is an interesting claim. A traditional way of life presumably means growing your own and harvesting food in season, which is a very good thing for your health and the planet.

It has a quarterly magazine, the snappily titled 'Allotment & Leisure Gardener' which contains news items from around the regions, as well as letters and a variety of topical articles. And, perhaps more practically, the NSALG offers allotment insurance cover through its brokers, to affiliated members under the Society's Insurance Scheme. There is also a discounted seed scheme through E W Kings Seeds is available to members of NSALG offering considerable savings.

Above all though the NSALG aims to offer information, advice and guidance on a professional basis on a range of issues including but not limited to:

History of allotments, finding a plot, plot holders and local authorities responsibilities, allotment legislation, disposal of allotments, notices to quit, livestock, preparation of leases and rental agreements, legal advice, research including statistical information, consultation with local authorities, preparation and revision of model/constitutional rules.
