Dodging weather on the allotment
Frost
Hail
Torrential rain leading to localised flooding - mainly where my beans should be going
Gales
Brilliant sunshine.
I've tried to get up to the plot whenever the weather has been 'clement' whatever that means, and I've been rewarded with some gorgeous moments when the sun has emerged and the wallflowers have delivered a small amount of fragrance on the still chilly air.
I'm picking bushels (or at least bagfulls) of purple-sprouting broccoli and looking enviously at neighbours who still have leeks and cabbages. This week we had the last of our kale too and I made it into Stamppot a Dutch recipe that is hearty and easy
Kale Stamppot
500 grams potatoes
200 grams kale, washed and de-stemmed, then chopped
1 bay leaf
salt and pepper
milk and butter
Wash and peel the potatoes, quarter them and put them in a really big saucepan, then lay the chopped kale and bay leaf on top. Put water in the pan until it just reaches the top of the potatoes and add a little salt.
Bring to the boil and then simmer gently for twenty minutes or so until the potatoes are just tender. Drain into a colander and let sit for about five minutes. Remove bay leaf.
Mash with some milk and butter and lots of pepper and serve with strongly flavoured sausages and onion gravy.
Delicious!

The weather has been very indecisive our end too and i was really hoping to get my greenhouse up today....maybe tomorrow....god I can't wait to really get into the season and have veggies still to pull up this time next year!!
We have leeks and carrots and cabbages and are envious that your broccoli is sprouting. We haven't been to the plot for over a week due to being on holiday so fingers crossed that something has happened in our absence!
Haven't had anything off the PSB yet so very envious. I must be doing something wrong. I saved that recipe as I have no trouble growing far too much kale! Thanks.
That sounds delicious, I'll keep it in mind for when I have some Kale (none grown this year).
Mmm, as a kale fan I like your recipe.
Surprised to read that your wallflowers are out already. We must be a couple of weeks behind you.
Tanya - isn't it frustrating when the weather won't cooperate!
Green Lane - our cabbages were an epic failure, so I'm hoping 2010 will be our annus mirabilis for cabbages!
Damo - you will love stamppot, I'm sure of it.
Jo - kale is forgiving to grow and excellent for your health. Even slugs don't eat it but it's delicious when properly cooked.
Linda - I'm a bit surprised too - they are in a lovely sheltered area but even so, they are amazingly early.
