Allotment plots, pots and publicity
A question about pots? Has anybody tried these devices that make plant pots out of old newspapers? We have a problem every year with not having enough pots for our spring germination programme, but then for the rest of the year we have towers of empty pots that fall on us whenever we open the shed door. Degradable pots are a nice idea but pretty damn expensive if you use several hundred every year, as we do … so what do you do when you’re germinating vegetable seeds?
And publicity – we are very excited to have been mentioned in Kitchen Garden magazine this month!

I don't use a device as such to make my paper pots. I use a can of hairspray (insette) wrap the paper around, secure with masking tape and fold the bottom in. I had 40 sunflowers in paper pots last year and all did very well. No disturbed roots or mess :)
For short term planting such as beans and peas just to get them started so the mice don't get them, I use old cardboard egg boxes. What about using toilet tubes too?
Hi re: newspaper pots - you can make these using a straight sided drinking glass or jar, no need for a "gadget". Lots of demos on you tube etc showing how. Do you make full use of your toilet rolls? Great for growing anything with a longer root run, peas, bans, sweetcorn etc. I use both all the time as you say it is great not to have millions of pots about the place...
I use toilet roll inners to start many of my seeds off. I collect them all year round and then by sowing time I have enough to start off things which like a deep root run and don't like their roots disturbing as you can just plant out the seedling in the toilet roll inner, which will then rot down. Congratulations on your mention in Kitchen Garden.
Same as Jo, I continually collect toilet roll inners and just put them straight in the ground when the plants are big enough.
